Can we get some more PM space?

My inbox keeps filling up faster than I can delete messages! Is it possible to get a bit more PM space?

You have 200 now. If your mail box keeps filling up then just empty out the clutter.

Even with only 400 members, each with 200 messages, that's 80,000 PM's and 160,000 entries in the database, before a single thread, post, reputation or shout.

You can't specify separate settings for the inbox and outbox. But really on a forum like this why would you ever need to save more than 200 messages. I never have more than 30 between both my inbox and outbox, because I clean it out weekly.

We use a mySQL database, which is the most common type for sites that are not huge. The problem with mySQL is that it enforces max table sizes of 4 Gbytes in the database. That's why most forums limit the number of PM's that can be stored and they also purge old records, as well as why avatar size limits are so small.

To raise the PM limit would probably be OK for now, but at some point down the road, as our membership grows, it would have to be lowered back down and or periodically purged. As we all know, people will complain less about not having something they want, than about losing anything they did have.

There are a couple of options that would allow us to raise the limit without just having to lower it again down the road, but none are practical. To do so would require us to move to a server running Microsoft SQL. This forum runs on a dedicated server that I have and also host some of my web design clients sites on, so I have no out of pocket expense for hosting it. To move everything over to MS SQL would require modifying every database driven website on the server to run on MS SQL, and my clients would then be unable to migrate their websites to any server not running it. This would be costly and impractical.

The other options would be to move the forum a shared hosting account with a regular hosting company, which I do not want to do, because we are then sitting on a server with probably 200 to 400 other websites, and the forum becomes much more successable to hacking, DDOS attacks, and server slowdowns because some other website is running bad code and eating up resources.

The second option would be to lease another dedicated server with MS SQL solely to run the forum on. And the cost to lease a server and protect it as well as this one is protected would run over $300 a month.

Personally, I don't think the extra PM storage space is a neccessity, but if it is that important to you guys and you want to pony up the $300 a month to have it, I'd be more than happy to move the forum.

See, I really ain't trying to be mean, just practical. Big Grin

I just cleared out all my PMs, including the trash can, and it still says I'm over my limit.

EDIT - nm, it redirected me back to the inbox after deleting a page from the can, so still more left to delete.

You have to delete and then delete it once more in the trash can. Wish there was an empty trash button or something?
