The substance is derived from the male sex hormone testosterone.

In a recent "white paper" from the Sense of Smell Institute, Wysocki and Preti comment on the failure to show that androstadienone is derived from testosterone. Further, they comment on how unusual it is to expose study participants to extremely large amount of androstadienone and then claim that the effect is in any way pheromonal. For example, if you feed a lab rat the equivalent of 1 ton of cheese, and the lab rat explodes--did the cheese cause the explosion? A product marketer might say yes (and begin developing new weapons).

Researchers are typically more reserved. Mass media does not always lead to the truth. (Wasn't this study published last year?)

Today's news (fake): JVK has discovered a derivative of testosterone that causes rats to explode after one sniff. Concentrations required are toxic to all life on this planet, but there is hope for development of similar environmentally friendly derivatives, which rats probably will not consider friendly.
