Hi all. I just posted in another thread and it reminded me of a project I wanted to start awhile back and never did. I will run it by you guys and see if its worth starting.
The ambergris project. Any wise perfumer will attest to the mystical powers of ambergris. True ambergris. Yes whale vomit. Sounds gross but if you find a piece on the beach one day you will get paid handsomely.
Ambergris has long been used in history as an additive to perfumes and colognes. It has tremendous longevity and staying power along with a surprisingly pleasant aroma for being whale puke. It is also believed to have pheromone properties.
So how does whale puke become one of the leading additives to perfume? Time. Bio lesson aside heres the quick version.
Whales eat squid. Squid have hard indigestible beaks. Irritates lining of whale belly. Forms mass of squid beaks and mucus like cat hairball. Puke. Floats on sea surface for years. Washes onto beach. Collected by humane means.
Ok there are different colors of aged ambergris. White is the most desired from what ive read due to its luxurious mild scent. Gray is the less aged an has a more aquatic ozone note. Then I think theres like brown or black that isnt ripe yet and must be aged.
I am going to buy some light gray or white ambergris and test it for its pheromone properties. Hundreds of years of ppl using this stuff its time to figure out whats going on.
The place I'm getting the ambergris from collects from beaches and actually donates portions of their proceeds to the protection of whales. Sounded good to me.
Hears the shitty part. You have to soak it for like a year or some shit for it to dissolve into solution. Fuck that. Im going to micronize it then soak it in ethanol in the magnetic mixer. Lets see how fast that dissolves it.
This will take a bit of time to come to fruition but I wanted to see if there was any interest to test alongside me so I can make a bigger batch if needed. This isnt something im going to be able to whip up in a couple hours and going to be limited in quantity.
I think its time to find out what made this stuff so valuable to our forefathers.
