making your own cologne - leon333 - 04-17-2015 6:11 PM

im thinking of making my own colognes using essential oils.i found a dead simple recipe somewhere on the net for homemade perfume.all you need is vodka and EO.fill up the atomizer with vodka, and add essential oils of choice around 15-20% and let it sit for a month.anyone tried this method with good results?

No, but I'm in the process of making 3 different colognes (oil, water and alcohol) and I am going to report the processes. Big investment, but probably won't need to buy anything again and I know exactly whats in them.

Sorry you're right, you need Glyceryl Caprylate and Coco Glycoside to make it mix. You can also use witch hazel as well apparently. but yeah there is a "bridge".

RE: making your own cologne - kimosabe - 04-19-2015 9:43 PM

I was thinking along the lines of traditional methods like rose water preparation, but am still subscribed nonetheless.

RE: making your own cologne - ShadowX114 - 04-19-2015 9:45 PM

If you are following the directions from a website, please post it. I have been googling around to find a "recipe" , it seems there are different ways so I'm kind of confused. I have also created a thread asking about making our own cologne:

You have probably been looking at all the same places as I have. I am just going to try some different ways and discuss the silage and longevity of each one. I guess we could use this thread to discuss any tests? Do you have access to 95% Ethanol or the like? Was going to use vodka but managed to get some.

yeah I heard that you can use witch hazel..but it can destroy mones,no?

RE: making your own cologne - phero hacker - 04-21-2015 1:54 AM

I'm just going to make them as a cover, are you wanting add money to your cologne? If so I misunderstood.

Some EO 's have stuff that might damage mines too. Was just going to spray mine on different points to be safe.

RE: making your own cologne - leon333 - 05-19-2015 8:13 AM

works beautifully! dead simple without nasty chemicals.all you need is vodka and throw in your essential oils of choice and let it sit for 2 weeks and you're ready to roll..i sprayed it on top of my mones apps and it hit hard and fast, just like regular colognes..and essential oils smell so real and so good

I have fragrance oils from the thefragranceshop.com , it should work instead of essential oil right?

What's the ratio of vodka:oil ? I have a 5ml empty bottle (exact same as togo bottles from Androtics)

TFS scents are mostly essential oils, some are synthetic..i use 14% of EO.4ml of essential oils in a 30 ml bottle, and fill it up with vodka

Why vodka? Do you smell like booze? What can be used instead of vodka, perfumers alcohol?

RE: making your own cologne - phero hacker - 06-14-2015 8:01 PM

Well after playing around with several EO mixes and buying a couple of commercial cologne's I have found a couple of methods that work quite well. I had a lot of trouble getting masculine blends, I have made a few perfumes by accident, but have got a couple now that are quite nice, I added 95% alcohol at about 20-25% EO's (should have really been more thorough with this). Made up a couple of big batches (15ml and 25ml) with the intention of adding them to my unscented pheromones. I was afraid however of ruining the mones either by frying them with a mone destructive EO or the smell itself just not matching the mone itself.

Having read what Snoopyace does with his Love Potion oils,
(06-14-2015 5:31 PM)Snoopyace Wrote:  What I would do (because I was using Love Potion cover scents) I would roll on the scent and then add the phero over the scent. Worked great for me!

, I think I will do a couple of things. First I will make a couple of rollers with MCT (25% first try) and do as Snoopy describes which makes a lot of sense as it puts oil between the skin and mone thus adding to the duration of the mone and also giving projection.

I will also make some small (2ml or 5ml) mone mixes with EO cover and carry mone and cover (cologne with alc) seperately so I can dose accordingly. The best thing about this is that the EO's are natural, diluted (can't use pure EO on skin) and they are the same smells so won't cause a lot of weird smell combinations that will alert those mean old mone sniffers to find inconsistencies.

Don't think the body sprays (water or similar) will be able to cover the mone smells so haven't really gone any further than that.

Although I have spent enough on mixing supplies to buy a bottle of GIT or Aventus, I am glad I have done so as it is an interesting hobby and any failed mixes can be used as gifts (haven't made any that smell bad heheh). It would be cheaper and easier if you were to follow similar lines with fragrance oils, but I found it hard to find what ingredients are in those. EO's do smell awesome.

Vodka has very little scent other than the scent of alcohol itself, with both methyl and ethyl alcohol smelling the same. Since vodka is fairly cheap, it works well and evaporates just as quickly as perfumers alcohol. I use it in my cologne making, and for general cleaning.

Is price the main reason not to use everclear... or pure Ethanol alcohol? Was thinking of using this...

Sorry but EO is essential oils, right?

EO = essential oils, yes. The main reason to not use Everclear is that it's not available in every state. Some states have legal limits on drinking alcohol percentages. If you have Everclear, you can use it. Those who can't get it can use vodka.

RE: making your own cologne - phero hacker - 06-15-2015 3:34 PM

I was going to use vodka till I went to their suppliers and they sold me 95 ethanol.

RE: making your own cologne - ShadowX114 - 06-15-2015 5:45 PM

For the Canadians, since we don't have everclear, you can get an alternative brand that contains 94%. In Quebec, we have this: http://www.saq.com/page/en/saqcom/alcohol/global-94-/90076

I see they make a 40% as well, but... what actually is it? Just a grain spirit? I mean, 40% means there's 60% something else, right?

RE: making your own cologne - phero hacker - 06-15-2015 10:06 PM

http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.com/ is where I go, but not in the USA. You can try these guys if you have a store nearby (they won't post ethanol as it's dangerous) or contact them to find out about how to access perfumers alcohol or similar.

I don't know if that's just a quirk of the seller... the USPS won't legally transport drinking alcohols, but pretty well all other couriers will. I ordered in a bottle of very good absinthe from the UK last year, now that it's perfectly legal to do so. Declared it and it was shipped by their courier to the US border, passed through customs and then delivered by UPS who even checked my ID. That stuff is a whopping 72% alcohol. Not Everclear, but still pretty flammable.

RE: making your own cologne - phero hacker - 06-16-2015 1:56 AM

Yeah it could possibly be an Australian thing, they are just so strict here about everything. Oh well I suppose it's better than the extreme opposite, I'm still surprised we can even get mones here.

Did you trip out on the Absinthe or just get Drunk

Although off-topic, I'll answer it quickly here.
Although I purchased it from a UK vendor, it's a French absinthe - Jade Esprit Edouard. Pricey stuff at just over $100US to get it here, but supposedly one of the best. I tried it the traditional way, bought glasses, proper slotted spoons, the bottle came with complimentary sugar cubes that said "absinthe" on the wrapper. I went over to a friend's house to try it together. I opened the bottle and the whole room smelled of black licorice almost immediately. I dripped distilled water over the cubes until they dissolved and the absinthe changed from green to milky. We took our first sip and gagged. Had to slam the stuff and almost wretched at how overpowering the licorice flavor was. This is some truly bitter nectar. I stuck the cork back in (yes, it's corked like a wine bottle) and haven't opened it since for any other purpose than to let people take a whiff of it. I may try some mixers or make a cocktail in the future. I feel bad putting such a top shelf liquor into a mixer. I think it might be good with root beer, though, and I'm curious about using it in place of vermouth in a martini. This stuff has got to be an acquired taste.

Awesome, I tried some years ago when a buddy snuck back a bottle from Czech Republic. My understanding is that the stuff that you get now and can import to the US is different or not as strong. Or so I heard...

I can get it here in Colo.... We have weed, lol, Im pretty sure they are not worried about alcohol. Wild West Baby! Im going to try Everclear...

RE: making your own cologne - SuperJoy - 07-04-2015 3:29 PM

I tried mixing everclear with EOs with success. Not sure the ratio tho... one OZ everclear to 20ish drops of EO.

RE: making your own cologne - ShadowX114 - 07-06-2015 8:29 PM

Since we are writing a bit here and a bit in the other thread called "How do I make my own cologne?" , I'm thinking of creating a 3rd thread as a merge; for a cleaner, clutter-free information. What do you guys think? I don't know how to call it though.....(The "Create your own cologne thread") ?
Then we discuss the 2 different ways of creating our own scents:
1) How to make a cologne from essential oil/fragrance oil
2) How to scent an unscented pheromone (e.g Glace/Corpo that come unscented by default or if we bought unscented products from PXS)

(07-04-2015 3:29 PM)SuperJoy Wrote:  I tried mixing everclear with EOs with success. Not sure the ratio tho... one OZ everclear to 20ish drops of EO.

So I'm assuming we don't need any kind of dipropylene glycol (DPG), Propylene glycol (PG) or vegetable glycerin (VG) ?

Is the scent lasting longer than a commercial cologne? What about sillage?

As for your ratio question, here's a copy/paste of my notes that I took from various sources. The first few are from SteveO in the forums (forgot whether here or his forums)

Quote:SteveO
When I make a master batch I leave out enough SD40B (perfumers alcohol) so that for every ten ml I need to add either .5 mL of fragrance or additional alcohol. That's already been done with your ACE. However adding a good quality essential oil is still possible.

Now adding actual cologne that's not concentrated you won't be doing much to it as cologne is already diluted to 20% fragrance in alcohol. Adding that same cologne as a concentrated oil would be perfect. Hence why I recommend EO or oils. Its not going to really throw off any ratios enough to notice a difference for the casual user so everything should be fine. You'd have to be a nut like me to notice anything.

You can now obtain the fragrances in 3mL dropper bottles. I use .5mL to fragrance a 10 mL bottle and about .65 for the 15 mL bottles. One 3mL dropper can make a 30 mL bottle of cologne full strength if that's what you choose to do.

From another user
I think the best option is to add an oil based frangrance (much stronger). I think about 1ml per 10ml of product will give a good scent/product ratio.

From book
The most prevalent solvent used in the manufacturing of perfumes is Ethanol

pheromoneXS AndrostANONE is available in 10 ml or 30 ml bottles as multiple different concentrations which you can select from 12.5 mcg per spray up to 500 mcg per spray. Bottles come with Perfumers Alcohol (SD40B) as diluent time set with 10% Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) (my note: so why is DPG added? What's its purpose??)

another source
You can start by acquiring a small collection of perfume ingredients, either fragrance oils or natural essential oils.
You can dilute these ingredients to 1% (take 1 part (start with drops) ingredient and dilute it in 99 parts carrier

I'm sure DRG, PG, or VG have their place I just don't know how to use them so I'm starting easy.

Right now I'm using these two products. 4Sensuous Scents Romantic Perfume Oils - Men and they seem to last a long time. I could still smell them on a shirt the next day after spraying them on my neck before I even put the shirt on. The pumpkin seems to really stand out. I'm not sure the silage but I'm sure it follows me around. My GF seems to really like the scent. I'm going to buy each of the scents in an oil buy themselves and try that next. Sidenote: My GF and I both went shopping with just the plant pheromone from this company and we had some really solid interactions with people.

I want to blend them with something musky... like real deer musk and amgergris but baby steps will need to be taken since I have no idea what the F I am doing! !

Do you think its as easy as mixing the two oil products with ethanol and just adjusting the ratios until its a good fit?

RE: making your own cologne - phergineer - 07-07-2015 11:10 PM

I use Everclear to turn my oils into sprays. For cologne/perfume like spray, I use 40% oil, 60% alcohol.
I tried however to use only 25% alcohol with body oils from The Common Scents, and it worked, but the consistency was like a thinner oil. When I asked the company why it works, they told me it's because their fragrance oils are pure body oils, with no other additives that would prevent them from dissolving so well in Everclear/perfumer's alcohol.
I tend to believe them. I used the 40/60 ratio for oils from other companies, and I need to shake them every time I use them. With the common scents oils I did not have that problem.

RE: making your own cologne - ShadowX114 - 07-08-2015 10:24 AM

Thank you. I will buy that Everclear alternative that we have here and test with the sample oils I have from thefragranceshop

RE: making your own cologne - phergineer - 07-09-2015 7:39 AM

You're welcome. I also tend to apply a bit of oil scent first and then follow with spray. That way I get the great diffusion of the spray, but the scent lasts longer on my skin due to the oil.

Hey Shadow. Did ya end up submerging the thread? If ya did, I couldn't find it. Cos am super keen on this subject.

Been reading all night about this. Both here and other sources.

Would be amazing to create that thread about making aphrodisiac EO based colognes.

So far am having some good luck with Patchouli and lavender.

Thanks in advance. Smile
