Different Oil-Fragrance Question
03-17-2013 8:24 PM

Does anyone find that oil fragrances act differently on the skin than ones with alcohol in them? I understand that maybe alcohol fragrances may burn off faster than oil based ones, but I am wondering if I am having some issues with mastering/applying oil. My goal is for others to smell a nice fragrance, but I want to be able to smell myself/what they are smelling too. This is my first time experimenting with oil fragrances and I am not getting them to get in the air in a controllable way.

GURL! This is a great question!

When I apply the oils only, I become accustomed to the scent and then sometimes I can't smell it unless I huff my wrist right under my nose...but if I ask someone else, they say they DO smell it - and from at least a foot away! It's made me NUTS more than once because I LIKE to smell them...then I get paranoid and wonder...if I smell them then does that mean it's too strong?!? Laugh1

Honestly! I would LOVE to know if there's a "rule of thumb" to follow. It's always been..."let's try this much and see how it goes"... because sometimes my skin will eat up a scent and sometimes it lasts 12 to almost 24 hrs!

Again, great question! Sorry I couldn't help Unknw

Hi Nu Trix!

Those are my issues exactly! Sometimes they can't smell it on me and neither can I, or they have to get close to me to smell and I have to really sniff hard to smell myself, or they can smell me a foot away (like with sugar plum fae) and I can barely smell anything at all.

I want to be able to smell me too. Kind of like with Steves phero blends. With his I could smell myself and others could smell me too, but it wasn't loud to them. Many said I smelled good.

So I am wondering if the alcohol or the spray action made a difference?

I am interested in discovering a rule of thumb as well.

Mara answered my question on the other board. She linked to a post about the mixes whether alcohol oil, silicone etc...I assume that has a bearing on this issue.

Haven't seen the link yet so I may answer my own speculation later....

I have noticed that some Love Potion scents are thick and heady from the get go, like Odalisque, Balls! and Honeyed Love Potion, to name a few. These are the ones I tend to gravitate toward because I can smell them from application to infinity - or at least hours and hours later. But then there are scents that seem lighter, like Pillow Patter, Tasty Tease and Flambe, that go on yummy but then I have to have my hand under my shnoz to really get a whiff of later. Some of the ladies affectionately refer to this as "my skin eating the scent".

I've tried lotioning up first and it helps...sometimes. Slathering gives the best results Laugh1

Creating a spray to spritz over the oil helps too, but sometimes it's still the same. The alcohol lifts the scent up and out but when the alcohol burns of I'm back to up close huffing again, lol.

Some have said using the silicone base keeps the skin from absorbing the oils/scent as quickly and helps it last longer. I've tried this by applying Alpha Dream's light copulin spray and do it with Corporativo...and, well, all my unscented ADs and although they DO cover the pheromones, it's sometimes still the same dilemma...I need to be SUPER close to smell them, sometimes within a couple of hours of application Sad BUT I guess that's better than smelling some of the more stinky mones!

Fuzzy Wuzzy lasts when I slather, but I made a spray with a bit of Ail's Voluptuous Vanilla added in and that gave it some staying power but it does change the scent a tad as well.

It just seems like a big ol' experiment to find the scents that work for each individual...but really...how bad is it? To roll around in Love Potion scents like cat nip I mean? Laugh1

Well, this post went absolutely nowhere! Oh well, food for thought anyway Blum3

Why not spray on a paper test strip and leave that strip somewhere else. Then come back to it and see how it smells. It won't be a perfect test, but it should give you a rough idea of how the scent ages from the perspective of someone naive to the scent.

It won't be strictly accurate. One of the distinctions of artisan perfumes is that they morph differently on everyone depending on their own individual skin chemistry. The oil needs to meld with the skin for the fragrance to bloom. They are very different from commercial perfumes which are full of fixatives that are designed to make the fragrance smell the same on everyone.

Yeah, it's not perfect. I was careful to qualify the statement. But the use of fragrance blotters and test strips (requiring a fairly heavy type of paper) is still a common practice used to explore the heart notes of a scent, so far as I can tell. It's better than trying to sniff the bottle, at least.

Test strips made of skin might have been a bit problematic. ;-)
