Doctoral thesis (with link) on androstadienone

Doctoral thesis
Effects and mechanisms of a putative human pheromone

Concluding sentences: "The current results further support the notion that androstadienone acts like a human modulator pheromone, namely modulating ongoing behavior or a psychological reaction to a particular context, changing stimulus sensitivity, salience and sensory-motor integration. However, these conclusions remain tentative until further replication takes place, best in ecologically valid environments. Furthermore, one has to keep in mind that the current studies could not replicate several previous findings and could not verify some hypotheses assuming communicative effects of androstadienone. Thus, the main assumption of this thesis that androstadienone is an active chemosignal is still challenged. Also, whether the term “pheromone” is indeed suitable to label androstadienone remains open.

Poster presentation:
Human pheromones, epigenetics, physiology, and the development of animal behavior

Main Conclusion:
When he was wearing the mixture compared to when he wore the diluent, women were more likely to make eye contact (t (12) = 3.43, p = 0.01; IRR: r = 0.964, p = 0.01). They also laughed more (t (12) = 5.20, p < 0.01; IRR: r = 0.810, p = 0.01), and they subsequently rated themselves as being more attracted to him (t (12) = 2.786, p = 0.016).

Our results combine the known effects of androstenol on LH and on mood with a likely behavioral affect of androsterone.

I can put this in context by saying that there is no evidence for effects of androstadienone on behavior, even in a study that used a design very similar to our work with the androstenol/androsterone mix. For example, "Effects of androstadienone and menstrual cycle phase on flirting behavior in random couples" (2008) was presented as a poster at an olfactory conference and the conclusion was "The current results reject the idea that Androstadienone enhances flirting behavior within couples."

For contrast, we concluded: Mammalian olfactory/pheromonal conditioning paradigms play a role in women’s altered perception of a man who is wearing an A-nol / A-Androsterone mixture. This role of olfactory / pheromonal conditioning in mammals extends to a difference in behaviors associated with women’s sexual interest in a man and in women’s self-reported attraction to the man.
------------------------------------
I will present this revised conclusion at the Society for Social Neuroscience conference next month in New Orleans, because I think it may be necessary to report our finding again in the context of my published work from earlier in the year: Human pheromones and food odors: epigenetic influences on the socioaffective nature of evolved behaviors

So far as I know, we were the first to show an affect on behavior of a mixture of androgenic pheromones, and only the affect of copulins (estrogenic pheromones) on behavior has since been reported in a poster from this year's ISHE conference in Vienna.

Those who are familiar with my domain can find more information in this regard, but they will also see that I have clearly turned towards more technically detailed aspects of human pheromonal communication in conjunction with the latest information on the human genome.

Too many irons in the fire, as always.

What I tried to convey is that there is no evidence for an affect of androstadienone on women's behavior, but there is evidence for the affect of an androsterone/androstenol mix.

My apologies James, I linked your conclusions to that thesis.Redface

Reading through it doesnt seem to find anything though imo the test method is not very good.
Personally my experience tells me Androstadienone does have a positive effect with women even used unscented.

In my experience Androstadienone does affect female behavior. I've even used it straight no chaser with satisfactory results on the mentality of females subjected to it in doses around 50 mcg. The effect is very noticeable and Ive witnessed physiological as well as a psychological responses. Many of the females tested do not display these responses when I am not subjecting them to this molecule.

Androstadienone also seems to impart a memory effect that exhibits a form of pair bonding that I have not seen in any other molecule I have tested via pheromone application. The self effects I have noticed even bring out deep emotional feelings from me as well.

No problem.

Which test method is not very good? Both are virtually the same, but one showed no affect on behavior of androstadienone, while the other showed affects on behavior of the androstenol/androstadienone mix.

You bring us back to anecdotal evidence for comparison to controlled studies, which seems to reflect that you think your experience can be compared to study results. Of course, it can! But not scientifically.

Thanks. Unfortunately, there is no scientific support for the effect of androstadienone on LH (or any other hormone), which is required to link it to the affect of androstenol/androsterone mixture on behavior. I'm not arguing against what you have experienced, but I am arguing for controlled studies of pheromone-enhancement that incorporate the basic principles of biology and levels of biological organization required to link sensory cause to hormones and their affect on behavior.
