Jesus Christ, the world is every time more fucked up. People, open your eyes and take action! A government should fear it's people, not the other way around!

One way to protest monsanto is with your own purchasing power. By refusing to buy processed foods (which, if you live in America pretty much all contain monsanto's corn oil and soy bean oil which are detrimental to your health) you are making a statement and doing something that is good for your health and well-being. Support local farmer's markets and/or grow your own food.

Life's a garden; dig it

Labeling GMOs simply as GMOs is absolutely pointless, and most of these campaigns and the 'studies' they cite are backed by European agribusiness and distort the results.

Lets say you have an apple. Tests show that the apple doesn't make anyone sick. Then you dip the apple in gasoline and eat it and you get symptoms of gasoline toxicity. Do you ban apples or gasoline on food?

On that same note, lets say you have a GMO soybean. Tests show that the soybeans don't seem to make anyone sick. Then you dip the soybeans in roundup and eat them (before giving the roundup a chance to degrade.) You get symptoms related to roundup application to crops. What caused the problem? The GMO soybean or the roundup?

The point being that there are no scientific studies, none, showing that GMOs are more likely to be toxic. And I can give some examples of where conventionally bred crops were accidentally toxic. (For example, a strain of high furanocoumarin celery causing those handling the produce to get intense poison-ivy like reactions. The growers just saw that it was very resistant to insects... )

I've talked to farmers and asked them what their criteria were for selecting crops. They talked about time to harvest, disease resistance, appearance, etc. While they boasted about the taste and nutritional content of their crops, these things didn't actually factor into their decision making. The same crop-choosing criteria holds for conventional hybrid crops as it does for GMOs. And as long as that's the type of decision farmers make, that's what the plant breeders will breed for. The problem isn't about GMO or non GMO. The problem is that we have an economic system that encourages a race to the bottom when it comes to certain agricultural products.

As AG notes, avoiding processed foods (typically made with aggregated ingredients) and buying local when possible is one way to counter this 'race to the bottom.'

Hybrid crops are no less an 'experiment' than GMOs and often they are more of one since selective breeding involves much more chance and lack of understanding of why a certain crop has a certain benefit.

I have no particular opinion on the legislation being debated here (Salon says that there isn't an actual "Monsanto Protection Act", but for the curious it's said to be section 735 of H.R. 933: Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2013

You're welcome to read the text and form your own opinion.

Quote:Sec. 735. In the event that a determination of non-regulated status made pursuant to section 411 of the Plant Protection Act is or has been invalidated or vacated, the Secretary of Agriculture shall, notwithstanding any other provision of law, upon request by a farmer, grower, farm operator, or producer, immediately grant temporary permit(s) or temporary deregulation in part, subject to necessary and appropriate conditions consistent with section 411(a) or 412© of the Plant Protection Act, which interim conditions shall authorize the movement, introduction, continued cultivation, commercialization and other specifically enumerated activities and requirements, including measures designed to mitigate or minimize potential adverse environmental effects, if any, relevant to the Secretary’s evaluation of the petition for non-regulated status, while ensuring that growers or other users are able to move, plant, cultivate, introduce into commerce and carry out other authorized activities in a timely manner: Provided, That all such conditions shall be applicable only for the interim period necessary for the Secretary to complete any required analyses or consultations related to the petition for non-regulated status: Provided further, That nothing in this section shall be construed as limiting the Secretary’s authority under section 411, 412 and 414 of the Plant Protection Act.

I really can't stand Barry Dunham (aka Barrack Obama) but this article is worse.
It takes an issue and demonizes it without ever telling what the "Monsanto Protection Act" actually is.

They don't quote the bill, or reference the bill, or even get a link to the bill.

Every paragraph of the article is the same content, just rephrased or from a different angle, but no info is given about the bill, just about peoples reactions to the bill.

There is no pro/con list, just the emotions of people against it. This article is garbage as it does not inform or represent the issue, it is just propaganda from one side, and while it could be good propaganda, it is a bad article.

I did like the title of the thread " Obama betrays America ", but I don't know if he betrayed it with Monsanto or GMO or just by him being a spineless Communist who promises things like lower taxes or economic progress and in fact just delivers SHTF with the US deficit passing the GDP.
