Pheromones and falling in love (circa 1974)
08-29-2011 6:26 PM

I rediscovered this citation while searching for information on neural pathways that influence the secretion of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). That’s how mammalian pheromones influence our behavior, which doesn’t happen in Kallmann’s syndrome. It’s a syndrome associated with congenital anosmia. Infants are born with no sense of smell, and there are other symptoms to be considered. You can find details elsewhere. My point, today, is that most researchers were largely unaware (in 1974) that there might be human pheromones. But these guys suggest their involvement in falling in love. (I love it!) Here are my notes; the quotes are substantially informative.

“I would like to mention specifically Kallmann’s syndrome, which can open up a Pandora’s box.”

“There is a word we have not mentioned in this conference so far: pheromones. We really had better not only mention it, but start thinking about it if we are going to deal with puberty.”

“…the very deficit that created gonadotropin deficiency also does something else up there in the hypothalamus; i.e., one has a deficiency also with regard to" ...falling in love.

Wow 1974 - how much longer was it before any significant research appeared linking GnRH and exogenous stimulation?

The required link from pheromones to gene activation in the neurons that secrete GnRH came from the lab of Robert L. Moss in the early nineties, when he supplied me with a series of preprints that put me many years ahead of anyone else who was looking into the neurophysiology. He continued to act as my mentor for several more years until his untimely death while awaiting a heart transplant.

Wow sorry to hear about Dr. Moss, I can only imagine what he would think of what is going on today!
So really about 20 years to tie it together, man... Science can be so slow sometimes - I'm wondering if seredipity played a role in the discovery?

I think they made steady progress, step by step. But they also knew they were far from the proof that others would demand. Gene activation in a hormone secreting nerve cell of the brain was considered as likely to be caused by virtually any stimulus -- certainly not just to pheromones, and others commented to me to that effect. When I explained that Dr. Moss "Bob" told me in no uncertain terms that pheromones caused the gene activation, one researcher who had challenged me agreed that it was fine for me to state that fact, but he would never do so. Bob urged me to write the book. Another 16 years gone by since the book, and most researchers still don't get it. But I'll be submitting a journal article within the next two months that will put more pressure on them to learn.

Excellent, you progress towards enlightenment for us all!

If you run across any primer molecules that accelerate the process and enhance the effect of a pheromone, by all means let's do some field research in this forum! Everyone wants more bang for their buck!

I think I'll order a copy of The Scent of Eros - do you have any copies you'd like to sell via paypal or should I go with Amazon and whatnot?

Not sure what you mean, above. Androstenol elicits a GnRH pulse frequency directed effect on luteinizing hormone, so it could be considered a 'primer'. But in combination, androsterone appears to elicit a behavioral affect, which indicates it is a 'primer'. That's the only way I know to get to any effect on hormones that affect behavior (i.e., via a combination of 'primers'.

I have a few of the original hard-bound, which I autograph and sell for $50 to those who want a collector's edition. Otherwise, pricing for the 2nd edition paperback at Amazon or other outlets is best. Page 59 mentions falling in love with an appropriate citation to research.

cool I'll pick up a copy and give it a read - I'll get an autographed copy from you if its any good Cool.
I had not realized the difference between a GnRH effect and a beavioral effect, I'll do some reading so I can discuss in an educated ashion, thanks!
