I wonder what effect sage has in a mix. Specifically, some women have asked about what might be good for overly flirty men and I wonder whether some species of sage might be useful in that regard. Culturally, it's often used to 'clear negative energy' or similar. It seems to have some stimulating properties.

Why did you singl out sage if I may ask?
There are so many flavonoids and terpeniods that are neuroactive, many very close in it's MsoA to Neurosteroids and VNO-actives it's mind-boogling

Anecdotal chirp here: I've use sage in smudging rituals years ago. Rather liked it and kept it around for years.

I believe it was Clary Sage that the roman soldiers put on before battle. Interestingly there are a great number of "sages" out there.
E. turned me on to using Clary around an upset lady friend. Man that was a godsend. So here is how I rolled it to great effect: fan in front of uncapped oil. BAM! Easy sleeping, no bitching. Everyone happy all around. I'd hazard a guess that it has both relaxing and inspiring properties. This would coincide with the research but I'm certain I was using a different plant.

Lucky enough to meet Horst decades ago (who seemed to be a cross between professor snape and zen monk) and I'm simply amazed at how my life has come full circle with the awareness of how powerfully scent seems to hit our human matrix of emotional activation.

I currently find myself overwhelmed sheer volume of substances that would appear to trigger reactions in the pheromonal space and frankly amazed at his genius. It is all truly all around us and it goes beyond the raw scents.

If cognitive dissonance/framing/NLP tricks are wired into us, it isn't hard to believe substances in plants aren't as well... I seem to recall a show about this years ago... the private life of plants, I think?

1. Androtics used clary sage in some of their scents, I've heard. I have a bottle somewhere. Years old. I don't like the smell and it's hard to cover it. But I don't doubt it has some effect.

2. As JimmyCrack mentioned, some sages are traditionally used in smudging, a kind of 'purification ritual.' This suggested to me it had an effect. Not the sexual one most people are looking for, but I wondered what 'purification' translated to.

The essential oil of "the" sage, Salvia officinalis, is one of not too many EOs that aromapracticioneers advise against internal use. It seems it contains high quantities of Thujone, a monterpen-ketone, which can be very toxic.

Other sage-oils, like Salvia lavendufolia and the Clary Sage are composed differently. Clary Sage contains Sclareol, which is used to synthesize Ambroxan among other things.

I actually like Clary Sage as a perfume note when it is reasonably blended. Some say it's "estrogenic", some say it balances hormones in bothe genders, whatever that shall mean. The only study I could dig up with regard to male hormones showed increase of Test and LH.

Thujone is interesting stuff. Anti-microbial, hallucinogenic and likely neurotoxic though I don't know if the effects are cumulative or not. It was supposed to be the active ingredient in absinthe. (There's some debate over to what extent the negative effects of absinthe are due to alcohol, thujone or coloring agents used at the time.) Thujone is also found in a number of spices. I wonder if that's what contributes to the 'smudging' effect or if it's something else.

I can confirm no amazing effect with smudging. But yes, spiritual but may be associated with ritual and some pheromonal affect of the smoke which I found relaxing and centering and a bit energizing.

As for the clary sage: scent wise and in room diffusion this does have really good effect especially around PMS times and the female reaction to the scent is more favorable at that time. I found positive results all around and no negatives with me.

I also noted that it seems inverse to none - the smell is not well liked at peak. But this has only two test subjects to verify. Pure anecdote on my part.
