Yes, it is extremely finicky

Actually the 30-second delay is not to make things more difficult on you, a real member, but to stop DDOS attacks, and other things spammers, bots, and miscreants might do to suck up bandwidth and prohibit the site from functioning.
I cannot begin to count the number of times I've done a search and gone back to refine terms to be told that I need to wait X more seconds. However, if it is the only cross one has to bear to keep the flying monkeys out, then so be it.

There are, again, anti-spammer and bot reasons for this, but it definitely does make and M3X or TLG, or NA search impossible. But mainly this is to stop a search such as "the" "my" "I" etc (extremely common words that you will find in almost every post) from bogging down the system and killing off resources. You'd get timeout errors, and all kinds of chaos.
Lots and lots of form fields are also, for security reasons, restricted in character usage, minimum and maximum characters, etc. This sometimes is a problem; for example a friend of mine is named Michael Wu and you'd be surprised how many Last Name fields have similar 3-character minimums.
For myself, I find that the search works best (for me) when I combine keywords rather than just search for each and every mention. "M3X review", etc.
Not only does this narrow it down to give me data on my questions, but it allows for the search to function properly.
Since this site is based on MyBB, you might be able to use wildcard characters and "or" and "not" designators as well, in the search parameters. I honestly don't know, as I haven't tried to use any yet, but I will.
Edited to add: Sorry to just echo what you said there Mark.
I had began to answer this and got pulled away for business (I hate how my business gets in the way of my social life!) and when I finished the post and submitted it, I discovered you had already answered with exactly what I was saying (only better)
