Topical Alcohol - Skin Cancer?
09-26-2012 10:04 AM

Hey guys,

i couldn't sleep last night so I lay in bed thinking about 'mones Smile
I think I am middle of the road when using pheromones, i.e. not excessive amounts but significant over extended periods of time.

And I was wondering about adverse effects of the chronic use of topical alcohol. Did a quick google search and couldn't find any conclusive study stating it's safety or hazardous effect. Consensus came down to: We have no idea; further studies needed.

So i am turning to you people - from reading around I gather there are a couple of you with some understanding of the science behind it.

Please, please put my mind at ease and tell me I'm not sacrificing my health for pussy.

Thank you in advance.

Theres a wide array of opinions on it. No one seems to agree. Ethanol is listed as a known human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Yet the MSDS (2004) on pure ethanol says it is not. http://www.ee.iitb.ac.in/~nanoe/msds/ethanol.pdf

Much of the research on alcohol metabolism has focused on an intermediate that occurs early in the breakdown process of ethanol. This is called acetaldehyde. I do know that most of the negative effects are localized in the GI tract, brain, and liver.

Just about any cell that acetaldehyde come into contact with has potential risk for harm. This is what does all the damage to the human body.

Chemistry Alert: ok Ill kick out what I know about ethanol.

It is broken down in the body by alcohol dehydrogenase into acetaldehyde (known carcinogen). This is relatively short lasting as aldehyde dehydrogenase quickly breaks it down into acetate. Acetate is further broken down into carbon dioxide and water.

Not sure about alcohol metabolism via topical application and what it does to the skin or how much is actually absorbed transdermally as much of what I know deals with ingestion.

Funny. I was thinking about you when I was writing the post.
There are no guarantees in life, i guess.

My health plan covers annual screenings for skin cancer so I'll leave it at that and promise to report back should something suspicious turn up around my application spots Smile

Here's a source discussing alcohol absorption on severely broken skin. It seems to suggest that skin absorption leading to intoxication on healthy skin is very unlikely.

http://resources.metapress.com/pdf-previ...ze=largest

This source says no detectable ethanol absorption via the skin.

I don't know offhand if it could have a non-systemic effect. But there's some suggestion that it could.
