Halo,
You can pull alot out of thin air by reading peoples hand gestures. The "Paw", "Claw", "Cleaver" gestures are very definitive.

Artisan xSxP - Paw
Gaurdian xSxJ - Cleaver
Rational xNTx - Claw
Idealist xNFx - Hand gestures all over the place. And interlaced fingers while still.

N types use metaphors in conversation. S types don't, they may seem to, but S types use metaphors that are cliches, they don't make up new ones. This works as camoflage sometimes, as people may seem to seem (N) type, while they are just reciting lines that sound abstract/metaphorical.

I don't always figure people's temperament right away but when I do,,,,I thank my gut feeling. The only way I can explain how I figure it out is just watching what people do and what they don't normally do. I also watch for certain patterns of behaviors and sometimes just crass to test other people's values and boundaries.

Also, It also pays off to act naive sometimes.

I'm sure some of you understand this.

the I/E thing is a big thing in MBTI, because you aren't an I or an E, you are both.
the I/E represents the Dominant Function being I or E. Your secondary function will be the opposite.
In my case,
ENFP is
ENFP "” Discoverer Advocate Ne Fi T'e Si | Ni Fe Ti Se

Ne - dominant function is Extroverted Intuitive
Fi - Secondary function is Introverted Feeling
T'e - Tertiary function is Extroverted Thinking
Si - Fouth function (Duniho's Shadow Function) is Introverted Sensory

You can read up on the 5th-8th functions if you want.

The Ne and Ni are different. Same as the other Functions except for J/P which aren't modefied by the I/E.

The 1st function is noticable from around birth. Dominant Preference.
The 2nd function is used around age 8. Secondary Preference
the 3rd function is used around age 18. Tertiary Preference.
the 4th function is used around age 35-50 (cause of mid-life crisis).

The older you get more functions come into play. The 4th function is often not understood, and so it just messes with you. You all of a sudden have a subliminal preference pulling you in a different direction than you've gone for the first 35-50 years of your life, and you don't expect it, it's just there. Most people never learn to use/deal with their 4th function.

INFJ here. I've known my type since 2003 and have taken numerous versions of the test over the years and always come out as an INFJ. The descriptions always fit me right on. Like Dexter, I'm really into the MBTI work. So much so that I once created my own 36 question verbal version of the test which I personally gave to over 250 people in the span of a year or two.

I don't know how accurate David Kiersy's population results are, but if you take his numbers and extrapolate them out into gender (ie 16 types become 32 when you account for the male/female factor), then the INFJ male would be the rarest of the 32 types - which probably explains why I'm so into the MBTI, as it's the only thing (up until recently being diagnosed as mixed-state bipolar) that ever explained how unique/fucked-up I am.

One of my favorite things to do when I first meet a woman is try to guess her MBTI (INFJs are particularly good at this); I've given so many people the test that I just have a knack for figuring out someone's type. I'd say about 20% of college educated women have taken some version of the test at some point. I'm usually right about 75% of the time, and when I'm wrong, I'm usually only off by one letter. Even if I'm wrong, it almost always leads to an interesting and more intimate conversation - everyone loves to talk about themselves and what makes them tick.

It doesn't surprise me to see so many NTs (rationals, scientists, experimentals, inventors, etc) on this sight as well as a few ENFJs (mentors); if you'll notice some of the self-identified ENFJs (like Pago, Mark-in-Dallas, and Halo) are like protective leaders here... ENFJs are often the best at being quiet (think about Mark's moniker as "nobody special"), loving, protective, almost behind-the-scenes leaders who have an uncanny way of not just mentoring, but pulling the family/community together when it's needed... I definitely get that vibe from those three, even though I've never met them in person and have barely communicated with them directly in this forum.

Yeah, MBTI... I love this shit. I could write a book about what I've personally learned from my own experimentation with this work. Too bad my grad degree is in Finance and not Psych, but like dbot self-proclaims, I'm really more of a "street psychologist" anyway.

If you haven't taken the free online version of the MBTI that Dexter introduced in this thread (http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp), then I highly suggest you invest the 10 minutes or so in doing it. When you're done, you can post your results here and also google your four letter type to find tons more information about your personality description. For some, they are so balanced in two or more categories to be meaningfully accurate, but for the vast majority it is an enlightening and fascinating experience.

Another fun list of books related to MBTI personality types:

Highly recommend:
David Keirsey - Please Understand Me II: Temperament, Character, Intelligence [essential]

Tieger - The art of SpeedReading people [how to MBTI type other people thru hand gestures, metaphors, actions, really good]
Tieger - Nuture by Nature [MBTI for your kids, they don't have to read]
Hartzler - Functions of Type: Activities for Developing the Eight Jungian Functions [this has awesome activities that will let you see how different other types are, REALLY effective at illustrating just by reading through the exercises]
Gregory Hartley and Maryann Karinch - How to Spot a Liar: Why People Don't Tell the Truth...and How You Can Catch Them [Talks about the different types use of different lying styles, and what to look for]

I'm still reading these, not done yet::
Duniho - The Shadow Function
Terence Duniho - Wholeness Lies Within: Sixteen Natural Paths Toward Spirituality
David Keirsey - Personology
David Keirsey - Portraits of Temperament
Stephen Montgomery - People Patterns: A Modern Guide to the Four Temperaments
Isabel Briggs Myers - Gifts Differing: Understanding Personality Type
Isabel Briggs Myers, Mary H. McCaulley - Manual: A Guide to the Development and Use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
Tieger - Just Your Type: Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type

I found boring::
Stephen Montgomery - The Pygmalion Project, Vol. I: The Artisans (Love & Coercion Among the Types)
Stephen Montgomery - The Pygmalion Project: Love & Coercion Among the Types, Vol. 2: The Guardian
Stephen Montgomery - The Pygmalion Project (Vol. III : The Idealist) (Love & Coercion Among the Types)

Reviving an old thread here,

I'm an ENFP. I discovered MBTI a little over a year ago and was fascinated by it. Eventually I discovered the Enneagram Psychospiritual system of personality mapping.

If MBTI deals with cognitive functions, basically information gather between point A and point B, the Enneagram system deals with motivations and has its roots in the 7 deadly sins (plus two) and Freuds theory of the id, ego, and super ego. It's a great way to help with self actualization, but it is extremely more complicated because like the human condition personality can't be boiled down to 16 different types P

Check it out, http://www.personalitycafe.com Great resource for it.

Well hello there fellow ENFP.
I'd say that MBTI isn't basic, or basic info gathering. It does go into great depth on the motivations for action/inaction. How 2 different types can appear very similar in a situation, and act very similar, but how their motivations can be very different.

I haven't done the enneagram yet, I'm still overwhelmingly awed by MBTI.

Lately I've been looking at it more thru the glass of Hartzler's book "Functions of Type". How it is materializing to me is that MBTI groupings are not some Eatherial Personality, but based on skill set. It is amazing to see when you read thru the 8 Groups of skills [ iN, eN, iS, eS, iF, eF, iT, eT] how very much these skill sets form the vantage point that we view the world thru.

Granted there aren't 16 types of people.
There are only 2 types of people, 1-your type, 2-the other 15 types.
There is an entire second level after the 16 MBTI types, called values. Values are the peices of our lives that make us so very different. They are sometimes handed to us by our parents/teachers/experiences and sometimes they evolve thru life or are learned thru reasoning.

People can be very easy to classify people into the 16 types, because it shows thru in their everyday routine. (see Tieger's "The Art of SpeedReading People")

But you can't see peoples' values as easily. I relate values to landmines. You don't know you've stepped on someone's value(s) until you step on it, then "BOOM" you've crossed the line.

Sometimes values are buried a few levels deep, like this hypothetical [Bob loves cat's, bob sees some sort of competition between cats & dogs, bob's aunt growing up was named Mildred, Mildred was a dog lover and lived in a green house, therefore in a roundabout way, Bob associates green houses and people who live in them with people who don't love cats.]
Many years later, Bob's marriage is stressed because his wife bought a green car. The value was (Bob loves cats), but the value has associations with it. This has gone from value to association. But Associations are very strong for some personallity types. It is shown that some MBTI personality types will store there memories with additional feelings that they felt at the time the memory was made like "meta-data", like (green house =bad feeling from association with dog lover/cat hater) and these associations can cause aversions or attractions based on the emotion that a person felt when the memory was made. And the part that is stored isn't the (dog lover/cat hater) it is only the (bad feeling) so that everytime you see a green house your memory "meta-data" of (bad feeling) will come up, so you get a bad feeling everytime you see a green house.

Sorry to run off at the keyboard, but you're welcome if it was any good.

I am an ISTJ as well. I have taken this test a few times and always came out ISTJ. This type fits me perfectly and what's interesting is that, I'm not a cop like Eeyore, but was going to be. Also I remember reading what careers would be good for an ISTJ and cop was one of the few suggestions.
